How the GPS has Saved the Passenger Driver

Remember the days of maps? Where you were the passenger plotting out the path to your destination? If you were smart, you would have researched and written the route down on  paper. If you weren’t smart, you would have entered the city center, somewhat lost, with the map folded in your lap. You would be frantically trying to read the street signs as you drive by them to discover where you were.

“Turn right on Henry.” you would say, only to discover that Henry was a one way street, and you were going the wrong way.

Car horns blaring, there is heavy traffic. Your only solace is that you have out-of-state plates. The driver looks at you, vein throbbing on his forehead. You swear you can see the steam puffing out of his ears as he exhales. He swerves to the right, into a parking lot, and grabs the map out of your hands.

“Don’t you know how to read a map?” His hazel eyes bore right into yours. You slink a little lower in your seat, your stomach churning. “It helps if you don’t have it upside down.” He throws the map back at you and jets forward back into traffic.

*at least nowadays, we can just blame the GPS*

  1. I thought I’d commented here already, maybe i lost it, I have lost some others elsewhere, thinking I’ve hit send and leaving the page. This so reminded me of my days as a passenger – and the time I navigated my partner into a cabbage field for thinking we’d reached the turn-off for a short-cut! Good use of the photo prompt Kelly, well done 😀

  2. Oh, I love paper maps! The big fold-out kind! I have good pattern recognition for that stuff, too, so I’m a decent navigator. When I have to go somewhere new, I’ll google it, study the map, and then just head out with the address written on the palm of my hand. GPS makes me hostile: “Stop telling me what to do!!!”

    1. That’s talent! I seem to forget any directions as soon as they are said 😕 I agree with the hostile part. I seem to think swearing goes well with driving, if it’s not at the traffic or GPS then I just swear at the radio 😉

    1. Me too ☺ I have never thought about putting one on my wall, that is a really interesting idea! It would be neat to see how much the landscape has changed, (if any). I am always amazed at how much cities expand over time, it would be great to hang on to an older map just to see. Great idea! Thanks for sharing!

    1. Haha! Funny how you were probably listening to it and was almost going to follow it’s directions until you realized that it was wrong…oh wait, that might have just been me when it told me to turn right while I was on a bridge! Thanks for sharing your experience!
